It’s hard to get folks to understand the connection between Snake River dams, and starving orcas. That’s why Dammed to Extinction was made.
The Salish Sea’s beloved killer whales are starving to death for lack of their preferred source of food, Chinook salmon.
For centuries, three unique pods of killer whales have thrived off the coast of Washington, spending summers in the interior waters of the Salish Sea, feasting on Chinook salmon. For the past 50 years, these orcas’ presence has thrilled and fascinated thousands of people–biologists, tourists, and unsuspecting pleasure boaters and fishermen. But Chinook salmon are in trouble–less than one percent of their historic abundance in the Pacific Northwest. The beloved local killer whales’ fate has followed the salmon. Dams have been the main culprit behind salmon’s demise. A broad and growing coalition of scientists, economists, and conservationists say removing the worst fish killing dams is the best chance we have to bring back majestic killer whales as well as abundant runs of salmon.
