Fall Tree Planting Event – Upper Hangman Creek

This fall we have 650 (5) gallon pots to plant on Upper Hangman Creek. Volunteers are needed and everyone is welcome to come even if you don’t want to or can’t work.  Registered volunteers will receive e-mail updates as we get closer to the event.

Details:

On October 26^th the Coeur d’ Alene Tribe will be hosting an event for Spokane Falls Trout Unlimited, and any other interested party looking to make conditions in Hangman/Latah Creek more favorable to redband trout and future salmon. As part of a large scale effort on a project called k’wne’ ‘ulchiyark’wmtsut “To Make it Crooked Again”, we will be planting 650 total pots, mostly 5-gallon pots, but also some 8-gallon pots. We will be using a bobcat with an auger wherever possible, where volunteers will be responsible for removing the trees from the pots and dropping them into a pre-drilled hole and filling in. There may be a large number of trees and/or predrilled holes complete by Oct 26^th. There may be the bobcat on-site digging fresh holes. All are weather dependent and soil conditions, and access for the bobcat in some areas prone to swampy conditions. There will be a brief training exercise before we begin.

Hiking boots or the preferred mud boots and gloves are needed. We will have some gloves on hand for anyone that does not have them. A variety of hardwoods including cottonwood, aspen, Pacific willow, water birch, and alder will be planted. I expect that with a good turnout we can plant several hundred in 3-4 hours and spend the rest of the time. Any individuals not wishing to plant trees may come to see the property and the improvements made, get a brief tour of our new hatchery in Plummer and the eagle aviary on Hangman Creek may opt to help set up lunch and enjoy all the tours. It is also planned to have Coeur d’Alene tribal members lead a traditional prayer and perform a dance in traditional costumes to bless the event.

Directions, Meeting Point, and Start Time:

We will be meeting at the Coeur d ‘Alene Tribes Fish, Water, and Wildlife Building at 401 Anne Antelope Ave, Plummer ID, 83851 at 9:00 AM. And we will be departing as a group to the project site at 9:30 AM. As you approach Plummer from the north it is on the west side of HWY 95. Make a right turn at Anne Antelope and the building will be on the right before you reach A St. If you miss the first turn you can make a right at A St and go past the Wellness Center, and past a meadow and you will see the heavy equipment in their yard on the right. Take a right and the building is on your immediate left after the yard.

• Tree planting and installing protection tubes
• CDA Tribe prayer
• CDA Tribe dancing
• Tour of CDA Tribe’s Eagle Aviary facility (optional)
• Tour of CDA Tribe’s hatchery (optional)
• Lunch and non-alcohol drinks provided by SFTU

What to Bring?

Check the weather to be sure to properly dress. It could be chilly and/or wet! Boots and work gloves are a must. All other tools and materials will be provided. A spare set of clothes is a good thing to bring as well, in the rare event you get really wet or fall into the creek. This happened once that we know of!
